Buckfast Butterflies and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary offers a great, enjoyable, otter and butterfly educational experience. Wander around the otter sanctuary and butterfly farm and see new butterflies emerge in tropical surroundings. See the otters swimming underwater in specially built glass enclosures. Follow the otter keeper around at feeding times. Learn about the otter, its recreational and family life whatever the weather!

Two views of a Swallowtail butterfly with 'dragonfly' heat circulation loops visible in the upper wing surfaces, seen for the first time.

Atlas moth, not so hot in temperature but really big!

Active and passive fine-scale heat imagery reveals fine detail at (1cm wide image). Fine-scale structure of a zebra wing butterfly is shown here with active  transmission, similar to near infra red trans-illumination, using a 100W angle-poise lamp. “Shimmering” transmission over viewing angles shows a structured photonic surface for different thermal wavelengths, similar to visible iridescence observed at optical wavelengths. This offers the possibility of man-made surface structures to selectively reflect in a tailored fashion or to create compact thermal filters. Man-made photonics structures with selective constructive interference in the heat bands may be incorporated into spacesuits or desert garments to imitate these heat effects.
