Hartmann's zebra (Equus zebra hartmannae). Look closely at the thermal image- the zebra is actually in negative. What is white in the conventional visible image is black in the heat picture. This is because white reflects while black absorbs and radiates, especially well under strong sunlight.

Zebra in strong sunlight shows zebra heat patterns (above).

 

Zebra under cloudy conditions show no patterning (below).

 

Dark stripes absorb visible light and reradiate absorbed radiation and body heat.

 

Light stripes absorb no visible light and appear dark on the thermal image!
